Drayton Entertainment Youth Academy Future Leaders Program
An enrichment and leadership program for the next generation.
Participants aged 15 and over, selected by application, will attend a two-day weekend workshop training course followed by a volunteer placement in one week of Drayton Entertainment Youth Academy’s Summer Camps, where they’ll be mentored by professional DEYA faculty members.
This hands-on learning is designed to lead youth toward earning a DEYA Future Leaders Program Certificate, volunteer hours and personalized letter of recommendation to assist in future job and post-secondary school applications.
The Goals of DEYA Future Leaders Program
- Develop leadership skills based in compassion, empathy and understanding
- Increase self-esteem
- Create a sense of belonging
- Increase the connection and commitment to the community
- Have Fun!
Upon completion of the Drayton Entertainment Youth Academy Future Leaders Program (DEYA FLP), participants will be eligible to apply for paid assistant positions for future summer and march break camps as well as workshops, sessions and other programs based on the needs of the Youth Academy.
Topics covered in the DEYA FLP workshop weekend include developing and leading activities in improv and theatre games, scripted acting exercises, musical theatre movement, vocal warm-ups and arts and crafts as well as training in supervision, communication, safety and risk management, anti-bullying and conflict resolution. This learning will be applied during their week of summer camp when they will assist with daily check-in and check-out, participate in room set up, support class activities, help to supervise lunches and breaks and support the needs of campers as directed by adults.
The training workshop will take place June 15 and June 16, 2024 at the Drayton Entertainment Youth Academy (145 Northfield Dr. W, Waterloo) from 10:00am – 4:00pm. The week-long summer camp placements will be in five locations during the dates found here. Participants can choose which week and location suits them best.
For the two-day training session, all efforts will be made to pair out of town leaders with local families to provide accommodation. Dormitory-style residence accommodations are available at The University of Waterloo, 20 minutes away from the Academy on public transit with rates starting at $60 per night.
